5 REASONS WHY TEAK IS THE ULTIMATE MATERIAL FOR PATIO FURNITURE

Teak has a long history of being a strong, durable, and useful material. People traditionally used it for shipbuilding because of its ability to withstand harsh weather and resist water damage.

Teak is a favourite of ours here at Patioline. We believe it’s one of the best materials for outdoor furniture. We’re proud to source our teak from ethical growers in Southeast Asia, harvested from Grade A trees which are at least 45 years old.

#1 RENOWNED WEATHER RESISTANCE

Teak patio furniture is highly resistant to weather, which is useful here in Calgary and the surrounding areas. Calgary is susceptible to sudden changes in climate, with rain one day and sunny skies the next. Luckily, remains beautiful and strong throughout all the weather patterns and seasons we experience.

Most other wood requires treatment with a wood preserver. Teak sets itself apart because its natural oil content keeps it nourished and healthy. Teak’s natural moisture means you don’t have to worry about it warping, cracking, or becoming brittle. It won’t break easily and can last for generations.

#2 LASTING FOR GENERATIONS

Teak can last up to 75 years—or more! Not only does it last so long, but the beauty of teak is seeing its evolution through the years. When you first purchase your teak patio furniture, it will be a lovely golden brown colour. Over time, sun exposure causes it to fade beautifully.

Another benefit of the naturally occurring oil in teak is it helps the wood to fade evenly. You can look forward to using your teak furniture for years to come. When you decide your time with it has ended, you can pass it along from generation to generation for all to enjoy.

#3 LITTLE MAINTENANCE REQUIRED

One of the most significant advantages of teak is that it lasts a long time without needing maintenance. In fact, teak requires little to no maintenance at all. This is again thanks to its natural oils. You only need to use warm soapy water and a sponge to maintain it occasionally. There’s no need to clean your patio furniture constantly; however, you can clean it once or twice a year to help it maintain its colour.

While teak is low-maintenance, you might wish to slow the fading process. Semco teak sealer is one of the most effective ways to protect your furniture from UV rays. Applying it twice a year can help the wood stay its brown colour. You can also do so with cleaners and polishes or invest in a patio umbrella to protect your furniture from the sun’s ultraviolet rays, which cause fading.

#4 RESISTANT TO INSECTS

Another remarkable benefit of teak and its naturally occurring oil is that it acts as a natural insect repellant. Insects, especially termites, wasps, and carpenter ants, can burrow into a patio set made of less strong wood. They can cause damage and significantly reduce its lifespan.

You also don’t need to invest in harmful chemical treatments for the furniture surface to repel the insects. Teak’s oil can be described as rubber-like. Simply put, it’s not the type of food insects like to eat. They would far rather consume other types of wood.

#5 SUPREME SUSTAINABILITY

We only source teak from ethical growers. Since the wood must be at least 45 years old before harvesting, it’s considered highly sustainable. It also has qualities that make it reusable again and again, so even when you’re finished with it, the teak wood has many other uses.

Teak is also considered sustainable because it is so long-lasting. Since you can keep your teak outdoor furniture for many years, you don’t need to replace it continually. That means less waste and a reduced impact on the environment.
